For many years it was the residence of the Anuradhapura rulers. Here they liked to rest, and in danger of invasions from the Tamils in this place they found security, shelter and protection. The former capital is rightly considered to be the best planned archaeological site in Sri Lanka, and its beauty is recognized by anyone who has had the good fortune to come face to face with this amazing landscape. Archaeological excavations began at the beginning of the 20th century, and the main attraction is the stone temple Gal Vihara - the most famous in Sri Lanka. The Gal Vihara monastery complex itself is carved into the rocks and next to the artificial caves created in this way, a monolithic statue of a reclining Buddha, which is as much as 15 meters long, is placed.
